JIGABET

Jigabet came from the realisation that in the jewellery world you get either letters or jigsaw charms but not combined. So through this project I explored the idea of combining them to create my own unique alphabet.

Jigabet comes from the words Jigsaw + Alphabet, taking the bits that worked together to create something brand new. Alphasaws sounded too close to dinosaur and creatures weren't the aim with this project.

I decided to explore 3 different alphabets from 3 different time frames in history, Latin, Classic Greek and Runes 900AD. I also used this project as an opportunity to experiment with a variety of clay bodies that I hadn't yet explored through my practice.

I loved this project! The rules were simple create a letter with jigsaw additions everyday for 100 days. I was so excited to start, my sketchbooks were ready to go in March so by June I was ready to explore and play.

I learnt so much about different clay bodies, adding textures to these and how each body reacted to different types of shapes and forms.

The project ended with a 100 Jigabet and ceramics is a long process so it was another 100 days to share glaze results and now you can see the completed work in itself collaged. The shapes and forms balance and play with each other the glazes reactions different to each of the clay bodies creating one cohesive work.

Within my ceramics practice, I explore abstracted shapes and forms, through both hand-building and slip-casting. I aim to create work that audiences want to touch and hold, to carry on that tactility from the making process.

Through experimentation with glazes, I explore colours and textures that create mini-worlds within the form or highlight the shape of the ceramic.
